Initial and Non-Invasive Assessments

Every epilepsy is unique, this section provides different non-invasive assessments modalities that will be tailored to you and your epilepsy. The objective of the assessment phase is to understand your epilepsy better and define a treatment plan that will impact your quality of life.

Electroencephalogram

Records electric brain signal from the surface of your head to localize the seizure

MRI

Provides detailed pictures of your brain’s structures to identify any abnormalities

Neuropsychological Testing

Evaluates brain functions

Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT Scan)

Provides information on your brain blood flow

Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (FDG-PET Scan)

Provides information on your brain glucose blood flow

Magnetoencephalography (MEG)

Provides information on your brain activity using sensitive magnetic sensors

Functional MRI (fMRI)

Provides information of your brain metabolic activity and blood flow

Intracarotid Injection Procedure or Wada Test

Evaluates brain functions in both hemispheres separately

If the results from the previous non-invasive tests are still not clear and the information required to determine the best treatment plan is not precise, additional and more invasive tests may be necessary for some patients to identify the location and size of the areas where the seizures are starting. These additional tests will also help to determine the effect of the surgery on the different brain functions such as memory and speech.
